Haku

Haku (白, Haku? written in jōyō kanji, meaning "white") is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto created by Masashi Kishimoto.
In the Malaysian dub, Haku's given name was changed to Shiro from episode 15 to 19, leading to the belief that this was in fact his surname. Haku has never been given one, however.
Despite only playing a minor role at the beginning of the series, Haku has made several appearances in flashbacks throughout the series, including one in the second part of the manga. He also ranks consistently high in official character polls, though he's no longer in the top ten.

Background

Haku was born in a perpetually snowy village in the Land of Water at a time where those with a kekkei genkai were irrationally feared. Haku's mother was one of those with a kekkei genkai, and attempted to hide that fact, eventually marrying and giving birth to Haku. While they were able to live in peace for a time, Haku eventually discovered that he had inherited his mother's gift, and accidentally revealed their secret to his father while toying with his newfound power.
Haku's father rallied a small mob and had his wife murdered. He would have done the same to Haku, but Haku inadvertently created a field of icicles through the house in a panic, killing both the mob and his father. Orphaned, Haku wandered the Land of Water as a beggar child until he was found by Zabuza Momochi, who agreed to take him in, warning Haku not to expect any companionship. Haku, for his part, accepted this readily, devoting his life to becoming the ultimate weapon for Zabuza.

Personality

Due to his life as a tool, Haku is in essence Zabuza's possession and is fiercely protective of him because of it. When Gato attempts to grab Zabuza, Haku stops him by crushing his arm, not wanting any degree of harm to come to his master. After his defeat by Naruto Uzumaki, Haku asks that Naruto kill him in fear of the fact that he will no longer be of use to Zabuza. While Naruto tries to do so to bring Haku happiness, Haku senses Zabuza is in danger and goes to save him instead, giving his life for his master in the very end. In the English translation of the manga, Haku is referred to as Zabuza's "consort", furthering the idea that Haku is Zabuza's property.
Despite his life as a tool of battle, Haku dislikes the entire shinobi philosophy as it requires killing, something that he avoids doing if possible. When he finds Naruto, an enemy at the time, sleeping in the forest, Haku asks him to wake up, worrying about his health status. In addition to not harming Naruto, Haku gives him tips on how to become stronger. During his fight with Sasuke Uchiha, Haku appears to kill him, though in reality he puts Sasuke in a death-like state to prevent him from fighting further.
Haku has a heavily androgynous appearance leading to confusion about his gender both within and outside the series. Naruto Uzumaki in particular notes Haku's feminine appearance, claiming that he's even more beautiful than Sakura Haruno after Haku reveals he is actually male.

Abilities

Haku's kekkei genkai, Hyoton, comes from his unique ability to use both water and wind-based chakra at the same time, creating ice. While this ability is only seen in limited amounts, Haku has a very good grasp of the ability despite his young age, and can use the ability to deadly effect. While not directly related to his kekkei genkai, Haku can also use Thousand Flying Water Needles of Death (千殺水翔, Sensatsu Suishō?), which creates a thousand needles out of water that he can direct towards his opponent. Additionally, he is the only character in Naruto to be portrayed as being able to perform jutsu using one-handed seals, while all other characters use two-handed seals.
Haku's powers of observation and derivation are also above average as he is able to learn the nature of the Sharingan and devise a way to counter it after seeing it only once. Haku knows a great deal about human anatomy as well, and can incapacitate or kill a person with a single needle. Kakashi Hatake notes that ANBU members are taught to know every single detail of the human body, making it possible that Haku was trained as one. It is equally possible, however, that he could have learned these skills from Zabuza, who was a member of the Kirigakure ANBU before defecting.

Death

Haku joins Zabuza in fighting Team 7, where he is forced to fight Sasuke Uchiha. After Sasuke proves capable of keeping up with his speed, Haku creates a number of ice mirrors to trap Sasuke. Once merging with the mirrors, Haku can travel through them almost instantaneously, giving his opponents the appearance of moving in slow motion and allowing him to easily attack with a barrage of needles. Naruto eventually joins Sasuke within the ice prison, and bears witness to Sasuke's apparent death as a result of Haku's attacks. While Sasuke is merely put into a death-like state, Naruto is enraged to the point of tapping into Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed within him.
The demon fox's power allows Naruto to outclass Haku, catching him with ease and sending him flying through his indestructible mirrors. As Naruto charges toward Haku to deliver a killing blow, the mask covering Haku's face breaks away, revealing the face of the boy Naruto met earlier and stopping his attack. Having been defeated and therefore no longer being useful to Zabuza, Haku asks Naruto to kill him, though Naruto hesitates, believing that Haku is a human, rather than Zabuza's tool. Naruto also empathizes with Haku's being feared for his abilities, just as he was feared for bearing the Nine-Tailed Fox. After hearing Haku's past, Naruto remembers his vow to avenge Sasuke and proceeds to kill Haku. Just as Naruto is about to kill him, Haku senses that Zabuza is in danger, and departs with an apology to Naruto. Zabuza is elsewhere restrained and is about to be killed by Kakashi Hatake's Lightning Blade. Haku appears before Zabuza as a human shield, taking the full force of the attack and freeing Zabuza. As his life wanes, Haku grabs hold of Kakashi, giving Zabuza a chance to claim victory.
Zabuza initially appears unconcerned with the death of Haku, and is more than willing to chop through Haku's body in order to kill Kakashi. Naruto learns of Haku's death and criticizes Zabuza for his lack of compassion for Haku while Haku's purpose to live was to serve Zabuza. Naruto's words make Zabuza realize that Haku was a friend and not just a tool. In an act of retribution, Zabuza slaughters Gato and his mercenaries and finally collapses due to his extensive injuries. As his last request, Zabuza asks Kakashi if he can be by Haku's side in death as Haku was by his in life. As Kakashi takes Zabuza to Haku it begins to snow, leading him to wonder if perhaps Haku is crying. With the last of his strength, Zabuza wishes that he could go to the same place as Haku, and Kakashi believes that they will be able to go to that place together.
