Orochimaru (大蛇丸, Orochimaru?) is a fictional character and a major antagonist in the anime and manga series Naruto.
Orochimaru borrows heavily from Japanese literature — his name, as well as those of Jiraiya and Tsunade come from the Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari (児雷也豪傑物語, "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya"), and the Orochimaru in that story was originally Jiraiya's student until he was corrupted by snake magic.
Orochimaru is male, but speaks with a very formal female tone in Japanese to make him seem more sinister. Because this cannot be reproduced in English, he is instead given a masculine but quiet and raspy voice.

Background
Orochimaru is a former student of the Third Hokage. Orochimaru and his former teammates, Jiraiya and Tsunade, are known as the "Legendary Three Ninja" (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no Sannin?) or simply the "Sannin". His parents died when he was young, leaving him to fend for himself for much of his life. While under the Third's tutelage, the Third recognized Orochimaru's natural talent, often telling Jiraiya to be more like Orochimaru. The Third was aware of a malice and a lust for power within Orochimaru, but chose to pretend not to notice for he hoped he could quell this part of Orochimaru's personality. Orochimaru also possessed a sometimes callous personality, mocking Tsunade's brother Nawaki's death in battle. As the years went by Orochimaru formed a friendship with Jiraiya, and all the while his desire for strength grew. Orochimaru's parents had died when Orochimaru was still young, and one day while visiting their grave found the shedded skin of a white snake. As the Third Hokage, who was also there, explained, this was a sign of luck, as Orochimaru's parents had probably passed on peacefully.
After spending many years learning under the Third, Orochimaru began acting upon his inner desires of obtaining immortality in the hopes that he could learn every jutsu in existence as a result. To accomplish this goal, Orochimaru began abducting villagers and experimenting on them, trying to better understand how the body works and what modifications it could handle. In one such experiment, Orochimaru branded ten children with his own unique cursed seal in an effort to see what its success rate was. One of the ten was his own student, Anko Mitarashi, and she was the only one to survive. In another experiment, he injected the First Hokage's genes into sixty babies in the hopes of replicating the First's ability to use Mokuton techniques, as well as the First's ability to control tailed beasts. Orochimaru would not be able to see this experiment through to its completion, though he believed all of the test subjects had died. In reality, one subject, Yamato, survived, and retained the First's abilities that Orochimaru had desired.
While Orochimaru carried out his experiments in secret, he also tried to acquire the position of Hokage in the hopes that such a position would allow him easier access to secret jutsu. As the Third approached retirement, he attempted to teach Orochimaru about the concept that shinobi are only truly strong when protecting others, and that all members of a village should be seen as a family. Orochimaru, however, scoffed at these ideas, only desiring the title for the privileges it would provide him. Disappointed in his student's viewpoints, the Third passed the title of Hokage to one of Jiraiya's students who became the Fourth Hokage, denying Orochimaru the position he coveted.
Robbed of his only reason to keep face in Konoha, Orochimaru began to be less discreet with his abductions and experimentations, allowing the Third to eventually discover what Orochimaru was doing. Upon being found out, Orochimaru gave his former master the chance to kill him, but the Third couldn't bring himself to do it, thus allowing Orochimaru to escape. As he fled the village, Jiraiya, having come to think of Orochimaru as a dear friend, tried to stop him and persuade him to return to Konoha, though Orochimaru refused and turned his back to Konoha forever, acquiring a hate for his former home.
After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru joined Akatsuki, where he was teamed with Sasori. While what he did while a member of the organization is unknown, it is known that he tried to take control of Itachi Uchiha's body so as to gain the Sharingan. Due to the Sharingan's abilities, Itachi was able to counter Orochimaru's attempt and sever the hand that Orochimaru wore his Akatsuki ring on. Having failed to take Itachi's body, Orochimaru left the organization. When leaving the group, Orochimaru took his ring with him, and Akatsuki has, perhaps as a result, attempted to capture him ever since. At some point in time, Sasori inserted Kabuto Yakushi into Orochimaru's ranks as a spy, though Orochimaru soon became aware of this and persuaded Kabuto to side with him. At some time, Orochimaru took over the Land of Rice Fields. There he would create his own ninja village, Otogakure, filled with ninja loyal to him. Orochimaru has also created a number of secret bases throughout the Naruto world that he switches between on a weekly basis. As he goes from base to base, Orochimaru takes his severed hand with him, the Akatsuki ring still on its finger.

Personality
Orochimaru relishes conflict and unrest, becoming bored when neither is in motion. Ibiki Morino, when first seeing Orochimaru as a child, claims to have been terrified at the sight of Orochimaru, believing him to be a monster in human skin. Despite this, Orochimaru has a knack for winning otherwise desperate people to his cause, filling the void in their life with loyalty to him. He brands some of his most powerful subordinates with a cursed seal that corrodes their body and free will in exchange for power. While many of Orochimaru's subordinates seem to admire and respect him, the reverse does not seem to be true. Orochimaru generally treats his subordinates as pawns, caring only for their ability to further his interests. The only ones he shows any sort of care for are those he intends to use as a host, and this too is only because they can prolong his existence. When Sasuke betrayed Orochimaru, Sasuke concluded that Orochimaru had, over the years, lost whatever goal he was trying to obtain and simply wanted to play God with others lives.
Abilities
Being one of the Legendary Three Ninjas as well as a former member of Akatsuki, Orochimaru is a very talented ninja. Since his leaving Konoha he has performed many modifications to his body, resulting in his natural form being that of a giant white snake composed of many smaller snakes.[2] This form has the advantages of allowing him to stretch any part of his body to great lengths, regenerate any wound inflicted upon him, and otherwise use the snakes that he is composed of for attack.
He is a terrifying opponent in battle; being able to show his opponent gruesome images of their own death with his Death Forseeing Technique (死の観覧の術, Shi no Kumi no Jutsu?). In his normal form, he can shed his skin like a snake, and take on any appearance with the Vanishing Facial Copy Technique (消写顔の術, Shūshagan no Jutsu?), using the skin of another like a mask. The culmination of his research in immortality can also be found in this form, as it allows him to transfer his soul into a new body via the Living Corpse Reincarnation (不屍転生, Fushi Tensei?, English "Immortality Jutsu") once every three years and escape the effects of old age.
Orochimaru is also noteworthy for his use of Cursed Seals, which he uses to give incredible power to those deemed worthy. The idea of the Cursed Seals being taken from Jugo, Orochimaru bites the one he wishes to own a seal. The person will then fall unconscious from pain, and will sleep for roughly eight hours or more. While the subject is sleeping, images of Orochimaru spreading evil thoughts in their minds will flash before them. Once awaken, said person's Cursed Seal will have spread across their body. Whether or not there is a normal length for this is unknown, as only once has the process been shown. While in the seal's possession for the first time, they will have gained some of Orochimaru's personality, such as his sadism, while once the person has gotten more used to the seal's possessions they will retain all of their personality. The Cursed Seals also have a second form once it has spread all across the user's body, in which the owner of the seal will have transformed into satanic form of an animal. The first time anyone reaches the second phase, which they attain after taking a special pill that completely activates a Cursed Seal, they will die. To counter this, Orochimaru developed a method to prevent this, by puting the subject into an deeply unconscious state that gives the appearance of one dying.
Orochimaru's most defining abilities are his snake-themed ones, however. Using Hidden Shadow Snake Hands (潜影蛇手, Sen'eijashu?) and the more powerful Hidden Shadow Many Snakes Hand (潜影多蛇手, Sen'eitajashu?), he can project a number of snakes from his wrist to either injure or constrict an enemy. With Soft Physique Modification (, Soft Physique Modification?) he can stretch his body to infinite lengths, to which he usually does in a snake-themed fashion, and with Leech All Creation:Attack Prevention Technique (蛭万象・防火の術, Hiru Banshō: Bōka no Jutsu?) can merge with the ground, plants, stone, or other things for quick transportation in a way similar to a snake tunneling through the ground. He even wields the Japanese mythical sword Kusanagi and control its movements with his chakra, producing it with the Kusanagi Sword: Long Sword of the Heavens (草薙の剣・空の太刀, Kusanagi no Tsurugi: Kū no Tachi?, English TV "The Grass Long Sword") technique. The sword is summoned by a snake which extends from his mouth and the Kusanagi Sword exits the snake. His apparent interest in snakes has also caused him to apply the snake summoning contract to his arms, allowing him to summon snakes with great ease, and can even summon the snake king Manda.
Orochimaru has also shown other various jutsu, and, although he has shown only a limited amount of jutsu, it stands to reason that in his quest to learn all existing techniques his array of abilities has become vast. Five Elements Seal (五行封印, Gogyō Fūin?) allows him to strengthen any seal with the power of the five elements. Like many other ninja, Orochimaru can use Shadow Clone Technique (影分身の術, Kage Bunshin no Jutsu?) to create clones of himself. With Wind Release: Great Breakthrough (風遁・大突破, Fūton: Daitoppa?) he can breathe a powerful exploding blast of wind. Orochimaru can summon a demonic form of the old main gate of Kyoto with Summoning:Rashomon (口寄せ・羅生門, Kuchiyose: Rashōmon?), and can summon three of them with Triple Rashomon (三重羅生門, Sanjū Rashōmon?). Among the most inhuman and dark of his jutsu, Summoning:Impure World Resurrection (口寄せ・穢土転生, Kuchiyose: Edo Tensei?) allows him to resurrect dead bodies to do his bidding, at the cost of sacrificing a living person. In the anime, Orochimaru can also create an Earth Clone (壌分身の術, Tsuchi Bunshin no Jutsu?) out of mud and dirt, and he also developed Casualty Puppet (死者傀儡, Shisha Kugutsu?), allowing the caster to absorb a target's body and use their body as his or her own.

Plot Preview
Orochimaru serves as the primary antagonist of Part 1, his main goals being to capture Sasuke Uchiha as his new body to gain possession of the Sharingan and to destroy Konoha. During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru disguised himself as a Grass Genin he had killed and planted his Cursed Seal on Sasuke. Orochimaru then continued to shape his other plan of destroying Konoha, and, forming an alliance with the Sand Village, proceeded with the invasion during the Chunin Exam finals. Orochimaru then battled with his former sensei, the Third Hokage, where in the end the Third sealed Orochimaru's arms, preventing his use of jutsu at the cost of his own life. Orochimaru then went to one of the other Sannin, Tsunade, to heal his arms, which she declined. Orochimaru, seeing no other way, sent the Sound Four to retrieve Sasuke for a new body, and Sasuke followed him to gain the power to kill his brother. By the time Sasuke arrived, however, it was too late, as Orochimaru, unable to bear the pain any longer, had already switched to another body.
Over the next two and a half years, Orochimaru trained Sasuke to make him a lasting body, and Sasuke rose to the level of S-Rank ninja. Sasuke, however, had no plan of being Orochimaru's new body, as he had already surpassed Orochimaru. After a short battle, Sasuke killed Orochimaru and formed a team out of Orochimaru's former test subjects and followers. Kabuto, one of Orochimaru's strongest followers, then absorbed remains of his dead body into himself in order to surpass his former master and finally gain a purpose in his own life. At this point, Orochimaru's remains have merged with roughly one third of Kabuto's body, gradually taking control of him.
